Hi I’m Melissa Chan - Green, at school I was a shy student who loved writing. I was inspired by teachers who nurtured my passion for language and led me to journalism.
As a journalist, I could see there was a whole lot of change happening in education and a whole lot of jargon with it.
As a Mum, my son was so ready and eager to read early, I had to swot up on how to support him.
It struck me that I was privileged to have the time to research all this and wondered if other parents would be interested in these discussions too.
So the podcast was born. I speak with a diverse range of educators, parents and academics. Over the last year, guests have ranged from those shaping changes in classrooms to those who explain the risks and challenges that exist.
I’ve been mostly focussed on primary because that is where my head is at as a parent, but open to suggestions on high school topics too.
It’s an independent podcast I fund myself, with some help from corporate sponsors along the way. You can be sure I’ll clearly signpost when that is the case.
School Shorts is not politically aligned or funded and while I may request interviews with politicians from across the spectrum from time to time, it is my view that education should be nonpartisan and motivated only by what is best for students.
I bring a journalistic lens to the topics of discussion in education with the aim of connecting the skills and experience of our educators with the families who are keen to support them.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts!
x Melissa
